Privacy Policy

How Dark Reader treats your data: on this website, in its tools and in the Dark Theme for Chrome extension.

Last updated: October 23, 2026

Overview

Common information

This privacy policy describes how we treat personal information and data when you use the Dark Reader website at dark-shiftmode.com (the “Website”) and the Dark Theme for Chrome extension (the “Extension”).

In this privacy policy, we describe what kind of data we may collect of you in connection with your use of our services and how we may use such data. Below we call the Website and the Extension collectively “Services”. By using our Services, you agree to the processing of your data in accordance with this privacy policy.

We may amend this privacy policy from time to time by posting a new version online so please review it frequently. Your continued use of our Services after the posting of a new version is deemed as your acceptance of the modified terms.

What we collect on the Website

You do not need an account to use the Website, and none of the tools asks for your name or e-mail address. Files you open in the tools are not uploaded to our servers. The information we do receive is limited to the technical and analytics data described in the “Analytics” section below, and anything you choose to send us yourself, for example by e-mail.

Privacy & Local Processing

A plain-language explanation of where your files and notes live when you use the Website.

What stays in the tab’s memory

When you open a file in one of our tools (a PDF, an EPUB book, a Word document, a CSV or Excel sheet, an image) your browser reads it and the tool works on it directly in the memory of the open tab. The file is not sent to our servers. The same is true for text you paste and for screenshots: Dark Screenshots asks your browser for permission first, and the picture is processed on your device.

Unless you choose to save something (see below), the working copy of a file is not kept once you close the tab.

What the tools remember between visits

To make it easy to continue where you stopped, some tools keep small pieces of data in your browser’s own storage on your device:

  • your display settings, such as tone, font, text size, spacing and the site language;
  • Dark Notepad notes and the note you had open;
  • the last text in Text Reader;
  • the task, timer state and the number of blocks completed today in Focus Timer;
  • reading position and bookmarks in EPUB Reader.

This data stays in your browser. We cannot see it and it is not sent to us.

What My Library saves

My Library saves a file only when you ask it to, for example with an “Add to library” or save button in a reader. When you do, your browser stores:

  • a copy of the file (PDF, EPUB, DOCX, spreadsheet or image) in the browser’s IndexedDB storage;
  • a list entry with the file name, size, type and the date you added it;
  • the extras that belong to the file, such as PDF highlights and EPUB reading progress.

All of this lives on this device and in this browser only. It is not stored on our servers, it is not synced to other devices or browsers, and we cannot recover it for you if it is deleted.

How to delete your local data

  • One file: open My Library and press Delete next to the file. The saved copy and its highlights are removed.
  • Every saved file: in My Library press “Clear all files”.
  • Everything, including settings and notes: clear the site data for dark-shiftmode.com in your browser. In Chrome, click the icon at the left of the address bar, open Site settings and choose Delete data, or search for the site under Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data.
  • Private windows: data created in a private or incognito window is removed when all private windows are closed.

Deleting is permanent. Use Download in My Library first if you want to keep a copy of a file.

Analytics, Cookies and Third Parties

Analytics

We use Google Analytics and Cloudflare analytics to understand how many people visit the Website and which pages and tools they use most. This helps us decide what to improve.

Google Analytics may collect information such as the pages you view, the time you spend on them, the page that referred you, your browser and device type, and an approximate location derived from your IP address. It may use cookies or similar identifiers for this. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy. If you do not want your visits to be measured, you can use the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on or block analytics in your browser.

Cloudflare delivers and protects the Website and provides web analytics. To do this it processes request data such as your IP address, browser, the pages requested and performance information, and shows us aggregated traffic reports. See cloudflare.com/privacypolicy for details.

We do not send the contents of your files, notes or pasted text to either service.

Cookies and browser storage

The tools on the Website do not need cookies to work. Analytics providers may set cookies or use similar identifiers, and you can refuse or delete cookies in your browser settings; the tools keep working without them. Your settings, notes and library files are kept in your browser’s local storage and IndexedDB, not in cookies, and they are not sent to our servers with page requests.

Third-party resources

When a page loads, your browser may contact other services that we use to display it. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, and the PDF library (PDF.js) is loaded from the cdnjs content delivery network run by Cloudflare. These services can see your IP address and basic request details, as with any website. Other libraries, such as those for spreadsheets, Word files and sanitising text, are served from our own site.

Links to the Chrome Web Store, the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store or other sites lead to services with their own privacy policies.

Your choices

Because we do not run accounts and do not store your files, we hold no personal profile about you that we could export or edit. You control everything saved on your device (see “How to delete your local data”), and you can opt out of analytics as described above. If you have a question about your data, write to us at the address below.

Dark Theme for Chrome Extension

Personal Information

The Extension does not collect any personal information about you (such as your name, email address, etc.). Further, it does not collect or report back to us (or anyone else) any data regarding your computer keystrokes or other data unrelated to the services the Extension provides.

We don’t call Google APIs to obtain personal information. Moreover, when installing a Dark Theme for Chrome Extension on a personal Google account we are provided with no information regarding who has completed the installation.

This privacy policy contains no section on sharing of personal information because we have none to share.

Data

Dark Theme for Chrome Extension uses local storage to hold the user’s settings. All data are stored offline in your browser.

Cookies

We may send one or more cookies to your computer or another device. We may use cookies to improve the quality of our service, including for storing user preferences, improving search results and ad selection, and tracking user trends, such as how people search. Most browsers are initially set up to accept cookies, but you can reset your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, some features and services may not function properly if your cookies are disabled.

Analytics Data

We use Google analytics because it tells us how many users we have and what they use more. You would be advised to refer to the privacy policy of Google to see what they do with the hits they receive from you to their domains.

We do not use external links.

Security and Contact

Security

We take appropriate security measures to protect against unauthorized access to or unauthorized alteration, disclosure or destruction of data. These include internal reviews of our data collection, storage and processing practices and security measures, including appropriate encryption and physical security measures to guard against unauthorized access to systems where we store personal data.
