What this guide covers
Most PDFs are a fixed white page. Websites can follow a dark theme, but a PDF viewer usually cannot, so in the evening the document becomes the brightest thing on your screen. After an hour of a contract, a paper or a textbook, that glare adds up.
The Dark PDF Reader solves this without changing the file. It draws each page in your browser with a calmer tone, so the text stays sharp and the page stops shouting. Nothing is uploaded and nothing needs to be installed, which makes it handy for private documents. This guide walks through the whole process, from opening a file to saving your highlights.
Step by step
- 1
Open your PDF
Press Choose file on the Dark PDF Reader or drag a PDF onto the page. The file is drawn in your browser tab and is never sent to a server.
- 2
Choose a tone
Open the theme menu in the toolbar and pick Classic, Warm, Blue, Green or OLED. You can change the tone at any time without reopening the file, so switch to a warmer one as the evening goes on.
- 3
Fit the page to your eyes
Use the zoom buttons or Fit page width until you can read without leaning forward. Scans that were saved sideways can be turned with the Rotate 90° button.
- 4
Move around the document
Open the page thumbnails to jump to a section, use the arrows, or type a page number. To find a word, open Search in this PDF, press Enter for the next match and Shift + Enter for the previous one.
- 5
Highlight what matters
Switch on the Highlight tool and drag across the text you want to mark. Click a mark to remove it.
- 6
Keep it or close it
Press Add to my library if you will come back. The file and its highlights are stored in this browser on this device only. If you do not save it, closing the tab clears it.
Getting more out of it
Treat the tone as part of your evening routine. A neutral Classic tone suits a lit desk, Warm feels gentler late at night, and OLED black looks best on a phone with an OLED screen, where black pixels are simply switched off. Because you can change the tone while you read, there is no need to commit to one at the start.
If you study from a PDF, highlights and the library work well together: mark the passages that matter, add the file to My Library, and next time you open it your marks are still there. If you only need to read a document once, skip the library and simply close the tab when you finish.

Tips
- Lower your screen brightness as well. A dark page on a very bright screen is still bright.
- Try Warm late in the evening and OLED black on a phone with an OLED screen.
- The tone only changes how the page is shown. Your original PDF is never rewritten.
Good to know
- Scanned PDFs are pictures of paper. They look calmer in a dark tone, but search can only find text that is really in the file.
- Very large files depend on the memory of your browser.
